    Awards for employer of veterans and 2 top service officers

    An Employer of the Year and two top service officers were honored at the 100th Department Convention, held July 19-21 in Rochester.

    Employment Committee Chairman Thomas Rielly announced that the Center for Disability Services is the New York State American Legion Employer of the Year. Headquartered in Albany, the Center provides a variety of services and programs in 15 counties. It has a workforce of nearly 2,500 – and 25 percent of them are military veterans.

    Rielly also announced that Kimberly Haley is the Disabled Veterans Outreach Program Specialist of the Year, and that Kevin Melia is the Local Veterans Employment Representative of the Year.

    Gary Schacher of Cobleskill Elected Commander of New York State American Legion

        Commander Gary Schacher

    Gary Schacher of Cobleskill (Schoharie County) is the new commander of The American Legion Department of New York.

    His election came just before the conclusion of the 100th Department Convention, held July 19-21 in Rochester.

    “Never give up!” he declared as his theme for his year.

    “We are 100 years strong and we are paving the way for the next 100 years to be the voice for veterans” at the local, state and national levels.

    Service Officer of the Year Edar Paredes

    Edar Paredes, a member of Yonkers Post 1954, is the New York State American Legion’s Service Officer of the Year.

    He was honored during the 100th Department Convention in Rochester, and given a Department-level white hat emblazoned with the title.

    He also was awarded the national American Legion Citation for Meritorious Service.
