John Sampson Leads New York State American Legion
U.S. Navy veteran John B. Sampson of Salamanca is the 2016-2017 commander of The American Legion Department of New York. The Vietnam-era vet was elected just before the conclusion of the 98th Annual Department Convention, held July 14-16 in Binghamton. Commander Sampson is a 40-year member of Hughes-Skiba Legion Post 535.

Legion Honors Employment Reps, Employer of Year
The American Legion Department of New York honored two New York State veterans’ employment representatives for their outstanding work with military veterans, and hailed a Poughkeepsie-based company for hiring veterans.

Hero Cop Calls Veterans ‘True Heroes’

BINGHAMTON — Niagara County Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Tortorella, who was being honored Thursday as the New York State American Legion’s Police Officer of the Year for stopping a gunman in Wheatfield last year, turned the tables on a convention of Legionnaires and proclaimed:
“You guys who are veterans are true heroes… I can’t thank you enough.”

5th District Golf Tourney on Aug. 7 Is Open to Legion Family
OLD FORGE — The American Legion 5th District 2016 Golf Tournament takes place Aug. 7 at Thendara Golf Course, Thendara (Old Forge), NY 13420, reports District Golf Chair Michael E. Michalski. (The 5th District encompasses Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida, Onondaga and Oswego counties.)
