Department’s Yearbook History Wins National Prize
Frank Carletta
Department Historian Frank Carletta’s entry in the American Legion national history contest won third place honors in the One-Year Department Yearbook History category.
The winners were announced this month following the Legion’s fall meetings in Indianapolis.
There were 42 entries in four categories (yearbook and narrative histories on both the department and post levels).

National Executive Committee approves resolutions at fall meeting
The National Executive Committee approved a number of resolutions during The American Legion’s fall meeting in Indianapolis, Indiana, this past week.
They covered such topics as the Legion Veterans and Children’s Foundation, a Gold Star Families Program, Expedited Citizenship through Military Service, GI Bill topics, Apprenticeship Opportunities for Service Members, Honoring the National Motto of “In God We Trust”.

The Department of New York Mid-Winter Conference takes place Jan. 25-27 at the Desmond Hotel & Conference Center in Albany.
The conference housing form is now available for those who would like to reserve a room at the Desmond and take advantage of the Legion group discount.

Join Mets for Military Transition Summit
The New York Mets are inviting transitioning service members, veterans and military spouses to take part in “an invaluable opportunity to help with the next stage of their lives” – through a Military Transition Summit on Tuesday, Nov. 13.
The summit will be an all-day event and will contain a variety of resources that help with different aspects of transitioning into civilian life. Click here for details.

Commander Schacher: New Yorkers and Americans Stood Resolute

“New Yorkers and Americans stood resolute” when “terrorists sought to disrupt our way of life,” Department Commander Gary Schacher declared during a 9/11 Remembrance Service in New York City Tuesday.
The event was hosted by Lt. B. R. Kimlau Chinese Memorial Post 1291.
Commander Schacher was on an official visitation to New York County, where he got to see the World Trade Center and 9/11 Memorial as well as other sights and events. (See more photos.) Joining him were Department Auxiliary President Marie Mock, Sons of the American Legion Detachment Commander Jim Coates, and Legion Riders Director Bob Wallace.

Commander Schacher Presents $10,000 for Scholarships in Memory of Navy SEAL
The American Legion Department of New York donated $10,000 to be used for scholarships in memory of Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a fallen Long Island Navy SEAL and Medal of Honor recipient.
Department Commander Gary Schacher presented the donation Sunday, Sept. 9, to Lieutenant Murphy’s parents, Dan and Maureen, for the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation.
