NY’s Jim Troiola Is Leading Candidate for National Commander for 2022-2023
Vincent James “Jim” Troiola is now the leading candidate for National Commander of The American Legion for 2022-2023.

“In a recent, but very sad turn of events, the gentleman scheduled to become national commander before Jim, Randall Fisher of Kentucky, passed away following a two-week battle with Covid 19, a devastating loss to the American Legion,” Campaign Chair Rene Vanmulem notes. “As a result, Jim now becomes leading candidate and his election as our National Commander is accelerated by an entire year.”
While this may appear to many as a great advancement for Jim, “we must realize that his preparation to become National Commander and his fundraising efforts to complete the responsibilities associated with his candidacy have been cut short by an entire year.”
His committee, TEAM NEW YORK, reached out to the entire Legion Family several months ago asking for donations to support his candidacy. The arrival of the ill-fated pandemic, however, has kept most posts, units and squadrons inactive in an effort to minimize the spread of this virus.
“At this time we are requesting that the entire Legion Family support Jim’s efforts to become our national commander by submitting your donations to his campaign fund.
Checks may be made payable to Team New York Campaign Fund and sent to Department of New York Offices at 1304 Park Blvd., Troy, NY 12180.

Mattydale Riders Present $500 to NY Director

American Legion Riders Chapter 1832 in Mattydale presented New York Riders Director Ed “Cowboy” Morris with a $500 check on Feb. 7. The check represents proceeds from a meat raffle benefitting the NY Director’s Fund. Director Morris said he was honored to attend the chapter meeting that followed.

Yorktown Legion Honors 4 Chaplains Virtually

Each year Yorktown American Legion Post 1009 holds a Four Chaplains Ceremony “to honor these brave men and educate the public about their inspiring story,” Post Adjutant Patrick McDonough reported Feb. 6.
“With COVID we had to change our way of remembering these brave men of faith and created a virtual ceremony and posted it on YouTube…
“We hope that everyone enjoys this video attempt at keeping our Post’s traditions alive while ‘sitting out’ this pandemic.”

Malone to Host Bowling Tournament in April and May
Hoping to resume activities in the wake of the pandemic, American Legion Post 219 of Malone is planning the Annual New York State American Legion Family Bowling Tournament. It takes place over four weekends in April and May, 2021, at Lucky Strike Lanes, 36 Woodward Street, Malone.
The annual tournament attracts bowlers from posts, units, squadrons and chapters across the Department of New York.
The annual Legion Family tournament is open to members of the Legion, the Legion Auxiliary, the Sons of the American Legion, and the Legion Riders. There are team events, and doubles and singles events.
2021 tournament dates: Saturday-Sunday, April 10-11, April 17-18, May 1-2 and May 15-16.
Except for the opening day (when bowling is only at 1 p.m.), start times are 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Legion Helps Vet Without Heat

That’s the motto for the Rockland County American Legion Family, County Commander Patrick Casper noted after The American Legion successfully advocated on behalf of a veteran with two children who had no heat in her Valley College home.
The result was that the veteran’s furnace was serviced, and heat restored.

Rescheduling of National American Legion College
The National American Legion College will hold a class for 2020 applicants In November and a class for 2021 applicants in December.
“The class of 2020 college dates are confirmed for November 13-19, 2021,” National Adjutant Daniel S. Wheeler announced Jan. 27. “All departments who submitted applications still have one seat in the class,” based on the top-ranked applicant submitted. “Call-in letters will be sent no later than April 1 with the class dates, travel, and lodging information.”
After the 2020 class concludes, a 2021 college class will convene December 12-17, 2021, he said.
The 2021 student application will be posted and available on February 5, 2021, at legion.org/college. Applicants who were not selected for the 2020 class and would like to attend the 2021 class will be required to complete a 2021 application. Class of 2021 student applications are due July 31, 2021.
