Direct Deposit Now Available for Posts

The Department is looking to improve the current monthly process for issuing Post credit checks since the threshold has been lowered from $100.00 to $25.00, Department Adjutant James Casey announced.

“We hope to begin making monthly electronic payments by directly depositing credit amounts of $25.00+ into the bank accounts of those Posts who have met that threshold.  Our hope is that all Posts will participate in this initiative as it will ensure that money due to you is deposited quickly, as well as eliminating the handling and delays of a mailed check.”

In order to facilitate this process, Post treasurers are encouraged to complete the direct-depost authorization form and return to Department Headquarters at their earliest convenience.

A total of 12 teams played in the Department’s 32nd Annual Legion Golf Tournament,  held at Maple Hill Golf Club in Marathon, N.Y., on Friday, August 2, Department Golf Chairman Auseklis G. Krumins reports.

“Everyone had a good time enjoying the golf and the ribeye steak dinner afterwards,” he noted.

This year’s first place team was from Post 800 in Groton, captained by Keith Randolph. This is the second year in a row that Keith’s team has finished in first place.

Second prize went to Steve Livermore’s team from Post 401 in Owego, and third prize was won by PDC Frank LaMarsh and his team from Post 1365 in Staten Island.

Longest drive for men went to Keith Randolph and closest-to-the-pin for men went to Jay McIntyre from Post 974 in Whitney Point.

“Congratulations to all prize winners!“ Krumins said, adding that he “hopes to see even more teams participate next year in this simply fun day of golf for all Legion Family members.”

BINGHAMTON — “Rather than put their heads down after Clinton County tied the American Legion baseball state title game in the seventh inning,” the Daily Sentinel reported, “Smith Post players just asked each other who was going to get the championship-winning hit.”

It was Nate Van Wie, whose single drove in the winning run, lifting Smith Post to its fourth-ever New York State American Legion Championship title, and its first since 1998.

Smith Post’s 4-3 championship win on July 30 came just hours after defeating Orange County 3-2 with a walk-off sacrifice fly.

The state champs now advance to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Tournament set to take place at Joe Cannon Stadium in Ridge, Maryland from Aug. 7-11.

Henry P. Smith Post 24 is from Rome and led the 5th District.

The Clinton County Mariners team led the 4th District and is from Plattsburgh, sponsored by Post 1619.

Orange County Outlaws Post 1167 is the 9th District champion.

Other teams in the state tournament:

6th District: Endicott Post 82, state champions in 2014.

7th District: Two-time defending state champion Greece Post 468.

    – 8th District: Alfred J. Jurek Post 1672 from East Amherst.
