Meals for Geneva First Responders

The Geneva American Legion in partnership with The American Legion Department of New York handed out fish fry dinners to City of Geneva police officers and firefighters on April 17 “in appreciation of their service to our community in keeping it safe,” declared a Facebook post by Geneva Post 396.
Past Department Commander Rena Nessler, Geneva Post Commander Dale Mosher and Past Ontario County Commander Jim Nessler made the deliveries.

NY Legion Family Continues to Step Up During Crisis

Stay-at-home orders, along with self-isolating and social distancing, have provided an opportunity for American Legion Family members to show just how capable they are when it comes to stepping up for others amidst a crisis.
In Valhalla, N.Y., American Legion Adolph Pfister Post 1038 Legion Family members have been performing Buddy Checks on local veterans, including those at-risk, as well as local senior citizens. The post also is donating, shopping for and making food deliveries for those self-isolating or unable to go out in public because of health risks. And just last weekend a Post 1038 member delivered much-needed medication to a Legionnaire isolating with his wife, a member of Auxiliary Unit 1038.“Even though it’s small, guess what: For this family, it really means a lot,” Post 1038 Commander John Creskey said. “It’s a real challenge for folks around the country, and around the world, and everybody’s doing the best they can. We’re pleased as the local post to be able to do this stuff.”
Post 1038 has grown its membership every year since 2012, in part because Creskey said its relationship with its community is strong. “We never stop bonding with the community, whether it’s with Scouts or Americanism or needs, etc.,” he said.
Munnsville’s Easter Bunny
Munnsville American Legion Post 54 had to cancel its Easter breakfast and egg hunt, so the post instead set up a drive-thru that allowed the Easter Bunny to hand out treats to children inside their vehicles.

Message from Department of New York Adjutant
Convention Cancelled, But Other Business Goes On
Legionnaires, SAL members, Legion Riders,Just an update on where we stand today and a few notes on where we are going. The Department Convention for 2020 has been cancelled and the Visitors Bureau has notified all the hotels of that fact and all hotel reservations have been cancelled. The Binghamton Convention Committee is working on shifting the Convention to 2022 and we look forward to a successful transition.

State and National Conventions Cancelled
Health emergency forces cancellation of American Legion Department of New York convention
“Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 Department convention (scheduled for July 16-18 in Binghamton) has been cancelled,” Department Adjutant James Casey announced. (See his update.)
All officers elected for 2019/2020 will remain for the 2020/2021 Legion year.

Pandemic Not Slowing Down Legion Family Efforts in NY

Truckers traveling through the intersection of NY 177 and NY 12 on April 1 were given a pleasant surprise: a free lunch, courtesy of the American Legion Family from Post 162 in Lowville, N.Y. Free grilled hot dogs and hamburgers were handed out to a group of the U.S. workforce putting in hour after hour moving critical supplies across state boundaries as much of the nation has been shut down because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The post set up a grill and tent along the intersection, along with signs saying “Truckers Stop Here” and “Thank You Truckers Free Food.” At the stop, truck drivers were given hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and a drink before heading back out on the road – all while the volunteers followed social distancing guidelines.

Legion Helps Feed NYC Police Officers in Queens
The American Legion today received a “shout out” for donating food to the New York City Police Department’s 100th Precinct in southern Queens. The Legion had RBQ restaurant provide the food on Thursday.
“I want to give a huge shout out to the Daniel M. O’Connell American Legion Post 272 and The New York State American Legion for their generous donation of food,” RBQ proprietor John Moroney said in a Facebook post.
“The men and women in Blue from the 100th were very grateful for this tremendous act of kindness in a time of such uncertainty.(State Legion Adjutant) James W. Casey , great act of kindness and compassion. Bravo to all the members of The American Legion!!!! A wonderful organization that still keeps giving to our Country!!!!!”
