    ‘I Was Born into The American Legion’

    Judi Beischel, a Coast Guard veteran, traces her American Legion roots to her upstate New York birth.

    “I tell people I was born into the American Legion because my dad has been a Legionnaire longer than I’ve been alive.”

    Her father, Francis Slate – a 93-year-old World War II Army veteran and four-time Camden Post 66 commander – is now celebrating his 70th year as a Legionnaire.

  • Legislators Announce Funding for Legion’s Boys & Girls State

    UTICA – State Sens. Joseph A. Griffo and David J. Valesky have announced that the state budget includes, for the first time, funding for American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary’s Empire Girls State.

    Morrisville State College will receive $100,000 to defray the cost of hosting 1,100 high school students for Boys’ State, which will be held from June 27 to July 3. The College at Brockport will receive $50,000 to cover some costs related to hosting more than 360 high school students for Empire Girls State, which will be held June 30 to July 6.

    TROY — The Homecoming Celebration for Department Commander Kenneth Governor will be held Saturday, May 17, at at the Hilton Garden Inn, 235 Hoosick Street, Troy, NY. The celebration begins with a Hospitality Room in the Presidential Suite from noon until 4 p.m. The evening’s festivities will commence with a social hour at 6 p.m. followed by dinner and dancing in the Ferris Grand Ballroom.     Support for 2 Veterans Bills

    The Department of New York has issued memoranda of support for proposed bills in the New York State Legislature. One is for the handling of unclaimed remains of veterans and another would create an alternative criminal law procedure for combat vets. See memoranda here.
