Northport Legion Post Gets New Look

NORTHPORT — Northport American Legion Post 694 unveiled its new look Thursday, Dec. 19, which includes an elevator and other building updates.

Veterans, elected officials and representatives of North Star Construction hold a ribbon-cutting as they unveil the renovated American Legion Post 694 building.

The Post was built in the 1950s, but had seen few improvements over the years, reports the HuntingtonPost.com. As the veterans grew older, the need for a better facility, especially a more accessible one, became apparent, the online newspaper said.

Construction began in July on the $1.17 million renovation, which added an elevator, updated air-conditioning system, wiring and bathroom updates. The cost of the project was covered by federal grant money, secured by Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Congressman Steve Israel (D-Huntington), and a community development block grant from the Town of Huntington.

“I congratulate the Northport American Legion on their wonderfully refurbished building and I look forward to attending events at their beautiful new home,” Huntington Town Councilwoman Susan Berland said in a statement.

The Village of Northport is located on the North Shore of Long Island in the Town of Huntington in Suffolk County.
