Joseph Mondello Is Legionnaire of the Year
Joseph Mondello of Post 252 in the Bronx (First District) is the American Legion Department of New York Legionnaire of the Year, Chairman Joseph Barilla announced at the 98th Annual Department Convention, held July 14-16 in Binghamton. (Convention photo gallery.)
Mondello has been active in Legion programs for over 20 years, serving in leadership roles on the post, county, district and department levels. A past Department Public Relations Committee chair, he helped start a cable tv access program called “Veteran Focus.” He has played key roles in educational and PR outreach for such things as flag appreciation, POW/MIA ceremonies, World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., and veterans’ funerals. Mondello is a charter member of his local Legion Rider chapter, participating in rides to Ground Zero, the Vietnam Memorial in Lower Manhattan, funeral escorts, and the Legacy Run to the national convention.
Mondello was picked from a group of eight District Legionnaires of the Year. The others are:

9th District: Robert Young Sr., Post 199, Rockland County.
10th District: Robert Santo, Post 1244, Suffolk County.
