4 Players Awarded Department Baseball Scholarships
Four American Legion Baseball players won scholarships from the Department Baseball program, Baseball Chair Bruce Mayfield announced.
Braden Hoffman of Ilion, NY was awarded a first-place $1000 scholarship. His application was submitted to National American Legion for further consideration. He plans to pursue a teaching degree at SUNY College at Cortland, then a master’s degree, so he can teach school and coach sports. Braden was in the top 10 percent of his class at Central Valley Academy.

Remember and Honor
On September 11, 2001, four U.S. planes hijacked by terrorists crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania killing nearly 3,000 people in a matter of hours.The best way we can honor and remember the victims of 9/11, and all the soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen and coastguardsmen fighting the war on terror, is to continue to make them proud by showing our support and by our commitment to be ever vigilant.

NY SAL Member Makes History, Leads National Press Association
NALPA President Kevin Harrington and wife Anne. Both are past presidents of the New York American Legion Press Association.
Kevin Harrington of Sons of the American Legion Detachment of New York made history at the 2019 American Legion Convention in Indianapolis. He is the first SAL member to be elected president of the National American Legion Press Association (NALPA).

NY’s Doughboys Present Colors for New National Commander
Doughboys Color Guard from Post 396 present the colors for the new national commander.
The Doughboys Color Guard from Winnek Post 396 in Geneva, NY, had the honor of presenting the colors for the newly elected commander of The American Legion near the close of the 101st national convention on Aug. 29 in Indianapolis.
National Commander James “Bill” Oxford
After James W. “Bill” Oxford of North Carolina was elected national commander, the Doughboys were called up to the stage to present his colors, and then returned to the stage retrieve the convention’s colors to bring the event to a close.
A veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, National Commander Oxford was an aviation electronic technician for the A-6 Intruder and served in Vietnam during his initial enlistment. After being discharged as a sergeant in 1970, Oxford joined the North Carolina National Guard. He subsequently attended officer’s candidate school and transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve, where he ultimately retired as a colonel after more than 34 years of military service.

NY Is Center Stage with Over $54,000 in Donations
Immediate Past Department Commander Gary Schacher announced from the podium at The National American Legion Convention in Indianapolis Tuesday that the Department of New York was donating $51,239 to the National Emergency Fund (NEF).
