    NY Legion Announces $1.5 Million Fund to Combat Vet Suicide, Homelessness

    First 2 Grants Fund PTSD Treatment, Aid Housing for Women with Children

    2021-2022 Department Commander Frank LaMarsh presents check for $100,000 to Dr. Frank Bourke and Dr. Loree Sutton (retired Army brigadier general) from the Research and Recognition Project. The presentation took place Friday, July 15, during The American Legion Department of New York’s 104th Convention at the Veterans Memorial Arena in Binghamton.

    The American Legion in New York State has established a $1.5 million fund to address veteran suicide and homelessness.

    In unveiling the fund July 15 during the Legion’s state convention in Binghamton, American Legion Department of New York Commander Frank LaMarsh also announced the fund’s first two grant awards:

    • $100,000 to fund a pilot project to expand and measure the RTM ProtocolTM treatment for veterans suffering from post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD).

    • $34,450 to outfit a home for homeless women veterans with children.

    Compliance Meeting on July 15 During Convention

    A Compliance Meeting will take place during the Department Convention from 2 to 5 p.m. on Friday, July 15, featuring speakers from the State Liquor Authority and Gaming Commissions, Compliance Committee Chair Dennis McCarthy announced.

    The meeting, which will also offer a Q & A session, will be held in the Carousel Room at the Holiday Inn Downtown Binghamton.

    All Legionnaires are welcome.

    “As you are well aware, in order to host a Convention the magnitude of our organization, it requires an extensive fundraising campaign to support all activities including the sessions, buses and possibly a parade,” notes Convention Chair Robert Gardnere. “We hope your Post, Unit, Squadron, Riders Chapter, County or District will contribute by purchasing an ad in our Convention Book.”

    Legion Family to Converge on Binghamton for July Convention

    Members of The American Legion, the Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion will converge on Binghamton in July for the annual Department of New York Convention.

    It is the 104th Annual Department Convention, taking place at the Holiday Inn Binghamton, the Legion Headquarters hotel.

    At the same time, Binghamton hosts the 102nd Annual Auxiliary Convention and the 48th Annual Sons of the American Legion (SAL) Convention. The Auxiliary hotel is the Doubletree by Hilton Binghamton and the SAL hotel is the Quality Inn & Suites.

    For The American Legion, pre-convention meetings take place July 11 to 13 (Monday to Wednesday), with convention assembly being held from 9 a.m. to noon July 14, 15 and 16 (Thursdday, Friday and Saturday).

    Reservations must be made via the Housing Form available on the Department Convention page, which also has the “Call to Convention,” Hotel Agenda, Committee Authorization List, Reimbursement Voucher, Delegate Form and Alternate Delegate Form.
