August Motorcycle Ride Benefits Purple Heart Park

UTICA – American Legion Riders will be joining a Purple Heart motorcycle ride on Aug. 15 to raise funds for a battle cross at a Purple Heart Memorial Park.

The ride kicks off at 10 a.m. that Saturday at the Harley-Davidson Store parking lot on Commercial Drive in New York Mills (near Utica). Registration will be from 8 to 9:45 a.m., with a donation of $25 for riders and $10 for passengers.

The 100-mile ride includes a chase car and a rest stop at the VFW Post in Boonville, adjacent to a gas stop.

The event is the 6th annual motorcycle ride sponsored by the Central New York Chapter of the Military Order of the Purpose Heart, explained Chapter Commander Joe Fraccola, who also is a member of New Hartford American Legion Post 1376.

Legion Riders participate every year, noted Fraccola, who extended invitations to American Legion Posts throughout the region.

Proceeds, he said, “will support a new Battle Cross bronze statue to be placed in Utica’s Purple Heart Memorial Park honoring our military warriors who have made the ultimate sacrifice defending the freedoms we all share today.”

Following the two-and-a-half-hour ride, Harley-Davidson will host a Salute to Our Brave Defenders Military Appreciation Event.
