BUFFALO — More than 1,500 wartime veterans and family members are converging on Buffalo July 15-18 for the New York State American Legion’s 97th Annual Convention.
The Legionnaires will discuss issues affecting veterans, community and nation, such as better ways to treat post-traumatic stress, monitoring the VA healthcare system, and advocating for a strong military.
They also will honor a high school cadet of the year, an Eagle Scout of the year, top first responders from law enforcement and fire departments, top employers that hire veterans, a Legionnaire of the year, among others.
Before the convention ends on Saturday, the Legion delegates will elect a new state commander for 2015-2016.
The convention assembly will be chaired by outgoing Commander Frank Peters.
At the same time the Legion convention is taking place at the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Conference Center, concurrent conventions for the American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion are being held Adam’s Mark Hotel and Event Center.
