Baseball Hall of Famer Lee Smith Joins American Legion Festivities at Cooperstown

COOPERSTOWN — Newly-elected Hall of Famer Lee Smith joined National Commander Brett P. Reistad and New York Department Commander Gary Schacher on Friday to kick off American Legion Weekend festivities at baseball’s national shrine in Cooperstown, N.Y. Smith and fellow Class of 2019 members Roy Halladay, Mike Mussina and Harold Baines are among the 81 all-time greats who played Legion ball en route to making the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Legion Celebration Features 2019 Hall of Famer Lee Smith

The American Legion, which celebrated its 100th anniversary on March 15, is teaming up with the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum for a centennial celebration at the home of baseball this weekend, March 29-30. See Detailed Schedule.
The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum will feature programming with military themes as the American Legion celebrates its 100th anniversary. The iconic veterans organization, which was founded March 15, 1919, has an estimated 2 million members.
Class of 2019 Hall of Famer Lee Smith, who played American Legion Baseball in Natchitoches, La., will participate in a welcome event at 10:30 a.m. Friday in the Museum’s Plaque Gallery and a question-and-answer session at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday in the Museum’s Grandstand Theater. Both events are open to all Hall of Fame visitors.

Legion Points to Top Priority Issues for State Lawmakers
Providing alternative therapies to combat post traumatic stress and preventing veterans’ suicides are top legislative priorities for The American Legion Department of New York, legionnaires told state legislators March 12.
Legion leaders laid out their priorities during their annual Hill Day breakfast with lawmakers in Albany. Then veterans took the message to the State Capitol as they visited legislators’ offices.
