Legion donates $5,000 for scholarship in memory of Dansville airman
DANSVILLE — The American Legion Department of New York on April 28 donated $5,000 to help establish a scholarship in memory of local Air Force Staff Sgt. Alexandria Gleason Morrow.

A Final Salute to Mrs. Bush

We offer a heart-felt final salute to Barabara Bush, the wife and mother of former U.S. Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, both military veterans.

In a very real way, she was like many of us in New York’s American Legion Family. Raised in Rye, NY, Barbara and George first met at a Christmas dance in 1941. They strarted corresponding and a romance began. After graduating from Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., George enlisted in the Navy and trained as a World War ii pilot. Their correspondence was interrupted for a month when George, flying a Grumman Avenger over the Pacific, was shot down and rescued by a submarine. They married in 1945 while he was on leave from the Navy.
Known as a popular, self-deprecating, and sometimes frankly speaking First Lady, Mrs. Bush was passionate about such causes as literacy and civil rights. And military veterans.
As the Navy would say, Bravo Zulu, Mrs. Bush!

8th District Golf Tournament in Niagara Falls on June 15
The 8th District American Legion will hold its 2018 Golf Tournament on June 15 at Hyde Park Municipal Golf Course in Niagara Falls.
The 18-hold, captain-and-crew event gets underway at 10 a.m.
The tournament is open to Legion Family members. The $60 entry fee covers greens fee, golf cart, steak dinner and prizes.

Monroe County Legion Hosts 90th Annual Dinner for Rochester Ball Team
The Rochester Red Wings International League baseball team has always been a mainstay of the Greater Rochester community. The team has been in existence since 1899, and in 1929 the Monroe County American Legion began a tradition of hosting a dinner each year to welcome the team to Rochester just prior to the start of its new season. On April 3, 2018, the Monroe County Committee of the American Legion hosted the 90th Dinner at the Double Tree Hotel with some 425 people in attendance.

Legion Family members can now register and reserve hotel rooms for the 100th American Legion National Convention via a housing and registration form. The form is available here.
The National Convention takes place Aug. 24-30 in Minneapolis, MN.

Sen. Schumer Pushes for Canandaigua VA Funding
Commander Nessler: Need to maintain veteran health care in future
CANANDAIGUA — Department Commander Rena Nessler joined veterans and VA officials at press conference March 30 where U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer announced he was launching “a campaign to secure $190 million in much-needed funding for the Canandaigua Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Campus modernization project.”
