    New York Legion’s Scouting Program Wins Top National Award

    Dept. Presents Scout of the Year Awards

    The American Legion Scouting program in New York State is not only top notch, but is being recognized as perhaps the best in the country.

    The National American Legion has awarded the coveted Frank N. Belgrano Jr. Trophy to the Department of New York for rendering “the most outstanding service” this past year “to the program of the Boy Scouts of America.”

    Finishing as a Team at Patriot Highlander Challenge

    Three miles doesn’t seem like all that long a distance, until you are running that far through the hilly countryside of Cobleskill, N.Y., with wounded veterans. The 13 obstacles spread out along the course at roughly quarter-mile intervals don’t make it any easier.

    “We start as a team, and we’ll finish as a team, that’s all that matters.”

    Jr. Shooting Chair Shares Best Practices

    Over the past 25 years, The American Legion Department of New York’s Junior Shooting Sports Program tournament has grown from 21 youth air rifle competitors to nearly 130. The two-day American Legion tournament is held at Post 787 in Cicero, N.Y., in February, and 21 air rifle teams are expected to compete for the 2016-2017 program year.

    “The Junior Shooting Sports Program is one of the best kept secrets in The American legion; we need to talk to everyone about it,” said Lawrence Behling, Department of New York’s Junior Shooting Sports Program (JSSP) chairman to attendees of the Legion’s second annual JSSP Conference in Indianapolis on Sept. 17.
